Surgical Procedures
One of the areas most affected by aging and weight gain and loss is the abdominal area. After excessive weight gain and loss and pregnancy, serious sagging of the skin may occur, as well as loosening of the abdominal wall muscles. This causes a bulbous appearance in the abdominal area. Abdominoplasty surgery is performed to correct these deformities.
People who have been pregnant several times, who have experienced repeated weight gain and loss and excessive weight loss, and patients who have sagging skin due to aging are suitable for this surgery. Young patients and patients with fat distribution disorder and regional lubrication rather than excess skin can only be treated with Liposuction. The procedure to be performed is decided by examination during the interview.
Abdominoplasty is performed in the form of full and mini abdominoplasty. In a full tummy tuck, an incision is made in the lower abdomen, remaining within the underwear, and the abdominal skin is lifted from the abdominal wall up to the ribs. The belly button is protected by being separated from this removed skin. The parts below the belly button are cut out. The loosening and separation of the muscle in the abdominal wall is repaired. The remaining skin tissue is stretched and the abdomen is closed. The belly button is adapted to its new location. A taut, thin abdominal wall is created. Patients with excess and sagging skin in the upper belly area are candidates for full tummy tuck surgery. Mini abdominoplasty is especially suitable for patients with excess and sagging skin in the lower abdomen. In this surgery, an incision is made in the lower abdomen, which will remain under underwear. This incision is smaller than a full tummy tuck. Skin tissue is separated from the abdominal wall. The belly button is not separated from the skin. Separations and looseness in the muscle in the abdominal wall are repaired. The skin is stretched and a taut abdominal wall is created. Excess skin is incised and removed. In this surgery, the belly button is displaced approximately 2 cm downwards. Mini abdominoplasty is a less preferred method than classical abdominoplasty. This is because there are a limited number of suitable candidates. Both full tummy tuck and mini tummy tuck can be combined with Liposuction. During the examination, it is decided which method to choose depending on the severity of the patient’s deformity.
To achieve a better result and reduce complication rates in abdominoplasty, we recommend that patients lose weight if possible. However, if the sagging in the abdominal area hinders the patient's movements, prevents him from exercising or losing weight, we can perform this surgery to relieve the patient.
As in every surgery, we recommend that you quit smoking at least 3 weeks before this surgery as it impairs wound healing and affects tissue oxygenation. We do not recommend its use after surgery.
If anyone is using blood thinners, weight loss medications, or herbal mixtures to lose weight, we want them to stop before surgery as they may affect blood circulation and increase bleeding.
If you have a known blood clotting disorder or disease, it would be appropriate for your health to share this with your doctor before the surgery.
Abdominoplasty surgery is performed under general anesthesia. If a full tummy tuck is performed, it takes approximately 2 to 3 hours. If mini abdominoplasty is performed, it takes between 1 and 2 hours.
It usually requires hospitalization for 2 days. After the surgery, 2 drains are placed in your lower abdomen. Drains are removed depending on the amount of fluid accumulated in the drains after surgery.
We make our patients wear a corset while leaving the tummy tuck surgery and ask them to use this corset for about 1 month. We also ask you to walk in a forward-bent position from the waist for about 1 week to reduce tension on the stitches in the abdominal area. We allow a fully upright position after 1 week. Patients can return to their normal daily lives after 1 week. While lying down, we recommend that you lie down with your knees slightly bent and a height placed under you to reduce the tension of the stitches in the abdominal area. You can take a shower 1 day after the drains are removed. We recommend only walking-like exercises for 1 month. We do not allow weight lifting for 1 month after the surgery. During abdominoplasty, we recommend leg exercises as blood pooling and clotting may occur in the legs due to long periods of inactivity.
After this surgery, patients will have a scar that is slightly longer than a typical cesarean section scar (about the width of your two hands side to side). There is no scar left around the belly button. This scar can be easily hidden as it will be under the bikini and laundry line. Surgical scars take on skin color over time and become indistinct. In addition, after surgery, a scar care program is applied to ensure that recovery is healthy and rapid.
Light exercises such as walking can be started one week after tummy tuck surgery. They can do all exercises except abdominal exercises 1 month after the surgery. All sports are allowed two months after the surgery.
